Rheingau-Music-Festival
In the beginning there were two concerts in
the monastery Eberbach. Two successful
events inspiring Michael Herrmann to create
the „Rheingau Musik Festival“ together
with some friends in November 1987. None
could have known back than, that this cultural
initiative woulb become one of the most
successful german music festivals. A festival
nearly completely independent from governmental
aid. Even today more than 99 % of
the costs are covered by admission fees and
sponsoring. 19 concerts and 5 places of
event could be visited in the first musical
summer. For the 2007 jubilee 148 concerts
and 40 stages are prepared in the Rheingau
and its surrounding regions. The most important
places of event are traditionally the
monastery Eberbach, as well as castle
Johannisberg and the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden.
But also houses of god like the monastery
Eibingen, the stage Schloss Vollrads
Seebühne, the church Martinskirche in Lorch
and a number of selected vineries are waiting
for the festival’s visitors from the 23rd
of june to the 1st of September. With
130.000 more tickets are available than ever
before. For the festival’s jubilee director and
co-founder Michael Herrmann has chosen
“Of rulers and kings” as a guideline. Famous
commissioned works for emperors and kings
will be performed, amongst others also
Mozart’s “Kronungsmesse” or Händels
“Music for the royal fireworks”. This year’s
artist include Anne-Sophie Mutter, Alfred
Brendel, Wayne Shorter, Andre Previn, the
Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the London
Symphonic Orchestra. By the way, if you
don’t want to miss the beginning of the
festival with the HR Symphonic Orchestra
performing in the monastery Eberbach the
television channel hr show the concert on
the 24th of June at 21.45. The programme:
