Organic food from Austria:
it doesn’t get any better!
According to the most recent scientifi c studies, organic foods have more
nutritious ingredients, organic milk reduces the risk of eczema in children,
and organic strawberry extract inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

Organic foods make it possible to obtain the same
amount of nutrients while consuming fewer calories.
Furthermore, the production of organic
foods is easier on the environment and climate and good
for the soil’s fertility, ensures a more natural life for domesticated
animals, increases the biodiversity of seed, and
supports regional growth. Some results of comparative
studies concerning product quality must be seen and interpreted
in light of this level of progress. “It isn’t enough,
for example, to praise more ‘healthy’ fatty acids in organic
milk or more antioxidants in organic fruit alone, because
obtaining them by means of natural and sustainable production
is the most important thing there”, stated Dr. Alberta
Velimirov of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture
(Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau,
FIBL). She was discussing the enormous amount of potential
in this fi eld created by the implementation of ecologically
sound methods, up to and including healthy production
of foods. “The resulting benefi ts with regard to
quality are the icing on the cake, as shown in the latest
research.”
Austria continues to lead Europe in the organic agriculture
sector, and the popularity of organic foods among consumers
is still strong. At present, there are more than 20,000
organic farms in Austria, and they work nearly 16% of all
agricultural land. Bio Austria has estimated total turnover
of organic products at 600 mn euros, and of that fi gure 64%
is from the retail sector.
Laut neuesten wissenschaftlichen Studien besitzen Biolebensmittel
mehr wertgebende Inhaltsstoffe; Biomilch reduziert das Ekzeme-Risiko
bei Kindern, und biologische Erdbeerextrakte hemmen Krebszellen.
Biolebensmittel ermöglichen eine geringere Kalorienzufuhr
bei gleichen Nährstoffen. Weiters schont die
biologische Lebensmittelproduktion Umwelt und Klima,
fördert die Produktivität der Böden, ermöglicht Nutztieren
ein artgerechtes Leben, steigert die Bio diversität des
Saatgutes und begünstigt regionale Entwick lungen. Vor
diesem umfassend fortschrittlichen Hintergrund müssen
punktuelle Ergebnisse aus der vergleichenden Produktqualitätsforschung
gesehen und interpretiert werden. „Es genügt
nicht, beispielsweise den höheren Gehalt an ,gesunden‘
Fett säuren in der Biomilch oder mehr Antioxidantien im
Biogemü se als einzelne Highlights zu propagieren, der
Zusammen hang mit der artgerechten bzw. nachhaltigen
Produktion ist hier ausschlaggebend“, sieht Dr. Alberta Velimirov
vom Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau
(FIBL) im Biolandbau ein enormes Potenzial, das sich von
der Ökologisierung bis hin zur gesundheitsfördernden
Lebensmittel erzeugung erstreckt. „Daraus resultierende
Qualitätsvorteile sind dann noch das Tüpfelchen auf dem i,
wie neueste Ergeb nisse aus der Forschung zeigen.“
Im Biobereich ist Österreich weiterhin Europameister,
bei den Konsumenten liegt Bio weiterhin im Trend. Derzeit
gibt es in Österreich schon mehr als 20.000 Biobetriebe, die
schon fast 16 Prozent der landwirtschaftlichen Fläche
bewirtschaften. Der Gesamtumsatz von Bioprodukten wird
von Bio Austria auf 600 Millionen Euro geschätzt, davon
werden 64 Prozent mit dem Lebensmitteleinzelhandel
abgewickelt.
