is an obstacle to the development of strong brands. This
makes it all the more important to establish regional origins
as brands, thereby maintaining recognisability and
uniqueness. Effective control of designations and quality
is vital for this”, explained the ÖWM’s managing director,
who also mentioned the great success of the DAC wines.
The fi rst “classic region” along the Danube is the Krems
Valley, which joined the DAC system for the 2007 vintage.
For the fi rst time ever, the varieties Grüner Veltliner
and Riesling were also marketed in the Reserve category
for full-bodied wines. There will also be a Reserve category
for the Traisen Valley DAC beginning in 2007.
Milk for example
“Austria’s milk processors have been able to make their
way in extremely dynamic milk markets and increase
their exports thanks to the high quality of their products”,
stated Johann Költringer of the Austrian Dairy Association
(Vereinigung Österreichischer Milchverarbeiter, VÖM).
This was refl ected in the foreign-trade statistics for the
fi rst three quarters of 2007 published by Statistics Austria.
During this period, the dairy sector succeeded in increas
ing exports by 12.4%, from 585 mn euros to 658 mn
euros, while imports, valued at 317 mn euros, climbed
much less dramatically, by 6.7% to 338 mn euros.
This entails a 19.2% improvement of the foreign-trade
balance, from 268 to 320 mn euros, in the fi rst nine
months of the year.
The milk sector’s most important foreign-trade segment
is cheese, which saw an increase in imports of 4.9%,
to 194 mn euros, while exports climbed 5.1% to 248 mn
euros.
Both now as in the past, cheeses of higher quality are
more commonly exported than imported, which is shown
by the average prices. Extreme dynamism has been demonstrated
by the sour and fermented dairy product segments,
which had 17% growth to 140 mn euros. At the
same time, imports in this sector were much weaker, no
more than +2.5%, to 35 mn euros.
Austrian dairies also saw growth in exports of butter.
The whey market was extremely dynamic in the fi rst nine
months of the previous year, with exports of 50 mn euros
(+52%) and imports of only 12 mn euros. The export of
liquid milk rose by 15.8%, to 185 mn euros, during this
same time period. Of this growth, 8.6% was the result of
higher prices. The export of processed liquid-milk products
grew by 27% in terms of volume and 42% in terms
of value, to 76 mn euros, while raw bulk milk saw a
decline.
With a 59% increase to 43 mn euros and a decline in
imports, from 30 to 29 mn euros, the new members of the
EU had a positive balance of foreign trade overall.
“The foreign-trade statistics for the fi rst nine months
of 2007 show that the milk sector’s strategy, of more investment
in quality ready-to-eat products, is the right
one”, explained Költringer. “Austria’s milk economy will
continue on this path consistently so that it’s as prepared
Euro
konnte mit den Beitrittsländern ein positiver Außenhandelssaldo
erreicht werden.
„Die Außenhandelszahlen der ersten neun Monate des
Jahres 2007 untermauern die Strategie der österreichischen
Milchwirtschaft, verstärkt in konsumfertige Qualitätsproduk
