Additionally, the learners have experienced building bridges across
divides.
“I am excited that the LEGO Robotics Programme of the Deutsche
Internationale Schule Pretoria brings together learners from
different back grounds, cultures and ages to prepare them for the
future!” -Thomas Hettasch, Grade 11 robotics learner, reflecting on
his long experience in South African and international robotics.
The DSP learners have intentionally built relationships and
collaborated with international robotics teams. They have built
close partnerships with the industry, and reached out to the youth
in needy communities through robotics activities.
Journey towards 1st prize in “Learners building bridges”
What began as an activity with a small number of DSP learners
and only a few LEGO robots, has developed into a programme of
activities across the whole school spectrum. This has expanded into
German schools across Southern Africa, and also into the schools
of the surrounding township areas. The DSP robotics learners
have always been eager to share their knowledge and experience,
whether with youngsters at an early age, teams from other schools
at South African national competitions, or teams from Asia and
Europe at the international robotics events.
Moving ahead with robotics
“The next goal we want to achieve is that the top learners,
who have been highly trained in robotic automation, will find an
opportunity for an internship in Germany. We then want to utilize
our prize money to facilitate such internships.” Mr Norbert Klevenz,
headmaster of the DSP, initiator of the LEGO robotics activities
throughout the school.
As recognition for building these various bridges into many
different communities, the Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria
was awarded the First Prize in the international competition for
German Schools across the world. This prestigious award was
presen ted to the DSP for being an exemplary bridge builder,
thereby inspiring others to build bridges within schools, diverse
communities and the industry at large. The technical profile of LEGO
Robotics for which the Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria
received the First Prize in this competition can be viewed at www.
LEGO-ROBOTS: FIRST LEGO LEAGUE COMPETITION
On Saturday, 22 October 2016 the DSP Lego-Robotics Team “The
Un-X-pected” participated in the First Lego League Gauteng Central
Tournament at the Theo van Wijk Hall at UNISA. They brought back
the trophy for best Robot Programming – well done!
The theme “Animal Allies” was interpreted as “Free-range” –
structuring the team project around animal holding practises and
the effect of commercial interests on animal welfare. The day was
