Karate
We had a very exciting year at karate in 2016. The children were
actively involved and the results were excellent.
We held 3 tournaments this year and these events were well
supported by the DSP children. At our tournaments we often
have guest dojos and at most of our events this year we had 4-5
different guest dojos represented, including 2 Kenshikai dojos, 1
Diep sloot Kyokushin dojo, 1 Mamelodi Kyokushin dojo and the
Harlequins Dojo. This is in addition to our own 12 schools that were
represented.
In light contact fighting, Ayden van Niekerk, Jacov Marinkovic,
Kai Nieuwenhuizen and Pharrell Williams all took Gold medals. Rylie
van de Coolwijk took 3 Silver medals for fighting this year.
In Kata, Ayden van Niekerk, Gabriel Redecker and Pharrell
Williams all took Gold medals.
Vincent Plisic was the only DSP pupil to do full contact knockdown
fighting and in his first fight, he took a Bronze medal. He showed
incredible strength of spirit.
Gabriel Redecker took 2 Gold medals for Bo-Kata this year.
We select the top 10 students for fighting, top 10 for kata, top 5
for knockdown and top 5 for bo-kata for the squad. These children
are selected from all our students (numbering almost 200).

It is important to note that all children who take part in tourna
ments should be praised as they are making an effort to better
themselves and their abilities to protect themselves. It is very brave
to compete in fighting even if you wear protective gear. Well done
to all!
We also held 3 camps this year at the Deutsche Schule. This is
where the children do their belt promotion tests. All the children at
the Deutsche Schule passed their belt promotions and some even
skipped their belt levels. The camps are really fun and the children
meet up with kids from other schools and make new friends.
