La Réunion
We were all very excited to go on a French Island adventure. The
island is a French territory, and as a result the atmosphere and
culture are very French with an exotic touch of local religions and
cultures. On arrival on the 22nd September our host families were
there to collect us. We were in School the next day, but weekends
were for fun in the sun! Various trips included a visit to the volcano
- a grand natural wonder and a 1st for most of us. The landscape
was surreal and a mix of green tropical vegetation and red soil, like
the planet Mars. The trip to the Rhum distillery was not for the faint
hearted and we saw how rhum was produced on a large scale. The
boat trip on “Le Grand Blue” was beautiful and dolphins made us
smile. We also visited the artisanal market and a very colourful fresh
produce market where both locals and tourists hang out. The 2nd
October arrived quickly and we were on our way home.
In all, we experienced a cocktail of French Island style experiences
that will always remain in our memories. We were fortunate to be
more than tourists; we were part of the family to our hosts and local
students. It was an experience like none other!
