a diagnosis. So they don‘t
know about the infection.
About 1000 people are positive
and don‘t do therapy.
And there are another 600
people for whom the therapy
does not work. These
three groups are at high risk
of developing AIDS and related
diseases. Some of these
are extremely rare diseases.
Just one example: Out of a
total of 15,000 HIV-infected
people in Berlin, every year
around eight of patients
suffered from a disease that
is still not really understood:
Castleman‘s disease. This
is a separate type of tumor
that occurs in the chest
cavity, the abdomen, the peritoneum
and the superficial
lymph nodes.
There is little scientific
literature on this and this
is where our experience
comes in. We have successfully
treated so many
patients with it over the
years that we have become
one of the largest centers in
this field.
Each and every one of these
diseases is very rare, but
all in all, Berlin-wide and
worldwide, it is still a lot.
That‘s why it is so important
to reach
the Fast Track
City * goals of
90-90-90.
What precautions
can patients
take to ensure that the
disease doesn‘t become so
severe in the first place?
We are now talking about
infectious diseases that do
not necessarily have to do
with HIV, but can occur in all
people and are triggered by
bacteria. The bacteria take
over when something else
in the body no longer works
well. For example, when you
are hospitalized for a heart
attack. Or after drinking
too much and your liver is
broken. Or if the lungs have
been destroyed from too
much smoking or damaged
by a virus like Corona. Then
the bacteria come and
spread throughout the body.
This is not always the case,
but mostly. You can protect
yourself by living healthy. Or
through vaccinations, which
help avoid that certain
bacteria and viruses attack
the body in the first place. I
am
thinking
of pneumococci
and vaccinations against
pneumonia. Or HPV, which is
too late after a certain age.
It is important that young
people in particular get vaccinated.
But in Germany we
have a very poor vaccination
discipline, also because
many people think that this
is all nonsense.

In order to ensure that no one will contract AIDS by 2030, the United
Nations wants to achieve the 90-90-90 goals by 2020. That means: 90
percent of all people with HIV should be diagnosed accordingly. 90 percent
of people diagnosed with HIV are said to be on life-saving antiretroviral therapy. And
90 percent of people on HIV therapy are said to have a viral load below the detection limit
to prevent HIV from being transmitted through sex.
