Volcanic landforms are among the most widespread and diverse surface
features on Mars. Volcanic processes operated through the entire
evolution of the planet up to very recent times. Recent remote sensing
experiments have revealed important new aspects of Martian volcanology.
The ESA Mars Express mission carries the High Resolution Stereo
Camera (HRSC) that will provide 3D colour imagery. Additionally, a
separate channel with a narrow-angle optics (the Super Resolution Channel,
SRC) will take images with a spatial resolution of 2-3 m/pixel, which
will be embedded in the HRSC images (10-12 m/pixel). Thus, the SRC
images will be interpreted within the geological context provided by 3D
colour HRSC images. Such imagery is particularly valuable for the investigation
of volcanic features like lava flows, small shields, calderas, pit
craters, etc.
The camera will begin to collect images immediately after the spacecraft
has reached its final mapping orbit in mid-January, 2004. Major
volcanic constructs that will be covered early in the mission (January
and February) include the giant shields of Olympus Mons and Ascraeus
Mons. We will report on our preliminary investigations of HRSC/SRC
imagery of volcanic features on Mars.
Form
In diesem Vektor stehen Werte
Giant Polygonal Terrain: Relic of a Martian Ocean? —
Utopia and Acidalia Planitae are occupied by extensive areas of
polygon–forming troughs. This pattern is accompanied by ring–like structures
interpreted as ghost craters. Their origin might be due to the shrinkage
of desiccating sediments accompanied by differential compaction over
buried topography. The material may be of sedimentary origin deposited
in a standing body of water. We performed new measurements of crater
size–frequency distributions (SFD) in Utopia and Acidalia in in areas of
polygonal terrain and in surrounding units. All SFDs indicate for the
smaller crater diameter size range an age of 3.4 Ga. We observe a deviation
from the expected crater production function for the larger craters
(D >3 km). For the polygonal terrain a combination of the clearly visible
crater population and the ghost crater population yields an age of 3.8
Ga. Whatever obscures the expected production function of the crater
SFD in the larger size range occurred between 3.4 and 3.8 Ga, and can be
explained by extensive resurfacing events within a time span of roughly
half a billion years. This is consistent with the existence of a proposed
ocean in the northern lowlands.
In-situ dust measurements with the Ulysses and Galileo spacecraft outside
3 AU heliocentric distance revealed a collimated stream of interstellar
dust particles sweeping through our solar system. Here we report the successful
in-situ detection of interstellar particles in the inner solar system
at about 1AU. Interstellar dust particles have been successfully measured
in the inner solar system with the dust instruments on the Cassini
and Galileo spacecrafts. Both instruments employ the impact ionisation
mechanism: dust particles hitting a solid metal target vaporize due to
the impact and generate a plasma cloud. The measured charge signals
generated upon impact provide indications about particles mass, impact
speed, and rough elemental composition (the latter only in the case of
Cassini). Analysis of the data from both instruments together with kinematic
and geometric considerations allowed a separation of interstellar
particles from interplanetary dust. The values of the interstellar dust
flux derived from the Galileo and Cassini data at about 1 AU are in
good agreement together. A detailed analysis of the Galileo interstellar
dust data provided new evidences for the radiation pressure filtering, previously
identified by Ulysses. Furthermore, the presented data also show
evidences of a gravitative focusing effect on interstellar dust.
STEREO is a pair of spacecraft that will be launched in 2005, as part of
NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Probes Program. STEREO will observe Coro-
nal Mass Ejections (CME) with a stereometric view from two points
in earth-like orbits around the Sun. We present the design of the Solar
Electron Proton Telescope (SEPT), which is part of the instrument for
In-situ Measurements of Particles and CME Transients (IMPACT) onboard
STEREO. SEPT employs solid state silicon detectors to measure
particle fluxes in the kinetic energy range 30–400 keV (60–7000 keV) for
electrons (protons), with a geometry factor of 0.52 (0.68) cm 2 sr. Particle
