identification is accomplished via magnetic filters made of NdFeB permanent
magnets that deflect electrons from the proton counters, and foils
that filter low energy protons in front of the electron counters. The readout
electronics is built around an integrated Particle Detector Front-End
chip, which allows to meet the power and mass allocated to the instrument.
The energy and time resolution of the particle spectra is limited
by the telemetry allocation, which allows to transmit counts for 32 logarithmic
energy bins every minute. Each STEREO spacecraft carries two
SEPT units, viewing along the magnetic field lines in the ecliptic plane,
and perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, respectively.
IBEX - The Interstellar Boundary Explorer — •Horst Fichtner
1 and Hans Fahr 2 for the IBEX Team collaboration — 1 Institut
für Theoretische Physik IV, Ruhr-Universität Bochum — 2 Institut für
Astrophysik und Extraterrestrische Forschung, Universität Bonn
The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has the sole objective of
discovering the global interaction between the solar wind and the interstellar
medium. IBEX achieves this objective by globally imaging Energetic
Neutral Atoms (ENAs) that are produced by plasmas beyond the
Termination Shock, the closest of the inferred interstellar boundaries at
the outer edges of our heliosphere. These groundbreaking, high sensitivity
ENA observations are achieved with minimal risk using two very
large aperture ENA cameras on a simple sun-pointed, spinning spacecraft.
IBEXs highly elliptical Earth orbit provides viewing of the outer
heliosphere from beyond the relatively bright emissions of the Earths
magnetosphere. IBEX measurements enable the discovery of the global
nature of the termination shock and the flow patterns of the heliosheath
and the heliotail. IBEX also studies particle acceleration at the termination
shock and probes the interstellar interaction beyond the heliopause.
In short, the IBEX mission provides the first global views of the interstellar
boundaries, unveiling the physics of the heliospheres interstellar interaction,
providing a deeper understanding of the heliosphere and hereby
astrospheres throughout the galaxy, creating the opportunity to make
even greater unanticipated discoveries, and filling in a critical missing
piece of understanding in the Sun-Earth Connection Theme.
The energetic particle spectrometer RAPID on board Cluster–
a three-year overview — •Patrick Daly — Max-Planck-Institut für
Aeronomie
RAPID is an imaging ion and electron spectrometer on board the four
Cluster satellites. The lowest energy threshold is ∼28 keV while the upper
energy limit is 1.5 MeV for ions, and 400 keV for electrons. A timeof-flight
method is used to distinguish ion masses, allowing separation
of protons, helium, and CNO ions. Angular distibutions are obtained
through 12 (ions) and 9 (electrons) directional sensors to the spin axis,
and by binning the measurements into 16 spin sectors.
Since the start of the Cluster Mission in 2001, RAPID has made 3D
energetic particle measurements in all important regions of the magnetosphere:
the magnetopause, the cusp, the bow shock, the tail lopes and
plasma sheet. An overview of some of the results is presented here.
Plasma Density and Temperature Measurements in the Cusp
Ionosphere — •Christian T. Steigies and Robert F. Pfaff —
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Code 696, Greenbelt, MD 20771,
USA
A Black Brant X sounding rocket (NASA 35.033) was launched on December
14th, 2002 at 11:16:48 UTC from Ny Alesund, Norway to study
the electrodynamics of the cusp ionosphere and the open/closed field line
boundary region. The launch was coordinated with satellite measurements
and with optical and radar ground-based observations. The rocket
was launched during Bz southward conditions and reached an apogee
of 771km, well above the F-layer peak. Measurements by a fixed-bias
(ion) Langmuir probe and a swept Langmuir probe on the rocket payload
provide plasma density, density fluctuations, and electron temperature,
as well as the plasma potential. On the upleg of the rocket trajectory,
a very disturbed ionosphere was encountered, with large amplitude
(>20%), large scale (typically 10m-10km) irregularities superimposed on
the background, indicative of the open magnetic field line cusp environment.
By contrast, the downleg profile shows a smooth density profile
without irregularities that is consistent with the dayside ionosphere on
closed magnetic field lines. Elevated electron temperatures were observed
coincident with regions of energetic precipitations. These may have been
due to instrumental effects, however, and a detailed analysis is still underway.
We compare both the density and temperature measurements
gathered with the rocket instruments with those measurements simultaneously
gathered with the EISCAT radar.
Nichtlineare Wellen in Ionenbeam-Plasmen: Anwendung auf
MGS- und CLUSTET-Beobachtungen im Vorschock-Gebiet —
•Konrad Sauer und Eduard Dubinin — Max-Planck-Institut fuer
Aeronomie
