8.5.3 The ifconfig command<br />

The ifconfig command configures or displays network interface parameters for<br />

a network using TCP/IP. The command has the following syntax:<br />

ifconfig Interface [ AddressFamily [ Address [ DestinationAddress ] ]<br />

[ Parameters... ] ]<br />

The most commonly used flags are provided in Table 8-3.<br />

Table 8-3 Commonly used flags of the ifconfig command<br />

Flag Description<br />

AddressFamily Specifies which network address family to change.<br />

Parameters alias Establishes an additional network address for the<br />

interface.<br />

8.5.4 The iptrace command<br />

delete Removes the specified network address.<br />

detach Removes an interface from the network interface<br />

list.<br />

down Marks an interface as inactive (down), which keeps<br />

the system from trying to transmit messages<br />

through that interface.<br />

netmask Mask Specifies how much of the address to reserve for<br />

subdividing networks into subnetworks.<br />

up Marks an interface as active (up). This parameter<br />

is used automatically when setting the first address<br />

for an interface.<br />

Address Specifies the network address for the network interface.<br />

The syntax of the iptrace command is:<br />

iptrace [ -a ] [ -e ] [ -PProtocol ] [ -iInterface ] [ -pPort ]<br />

[ -sHost [ -b ] ] [ -dHost [ -b ] ] LogFile<br />

Some useful iptrace flags are provided in Table 8-4.<br />
