9.1 User license problems<br />

If it is not possible to log in to an <strong>AIX</strong> system because your session is<br />

disconnected after a login from the login prompt, an <strong>AIX</strong> license problem could<br />

exist.<br />

The following are ways that a user can access the system, which requires an <strong>AIX</strong><br />

Version 4 user license:<br />

► Logins provided from a getty (from an active, local terminal)<br />

► Logins provided using the rlogin or rsh -l command<br />

► Logins provided using the telnet or tn command<br />

► Logins provided through the Common Desktop Environment (visual login<br />

CDE)<br />

All other ways of accessing a base <strong>AIX</strong> Version 4 system does not require <strong>AIX</strong><br />

user licenses (for example, ftp, rexec, and rsh without the -l flag).<br />

The lslicense command displays the number of fixed licenses and the status of<br />

the floating licensing, as in the following example:<br />

# lslicense<br />

Maximum number of fixed licenses is 32.<br />

Floating licensing is disabled.<br />

To change the number of licenses, use the smit chlicense fast path. Figure 9-1<br />

on page 203 shows the corresponding SMIT screen.<br />
