-t type The type of query required. This can be any<br />

of the st<strong>and</strong>ard resource record types (see<br />

Table 12-2 on page 438).<br />

-w Instructs the host comm<strong>and</strong> to wait forever<br />

for a reply.<br />

name The name of the host or the address to be resolved.<br />

server The name server to query.<br />

nslookup<br />

The nslookup comm<strong>and</strong> enables you to locate information about network nodes,<br />

examine the contents of a name server database, <strong>and</strong> establish the accessibility<br />

of name servers. The typical syntax for the nslookup comm<strong>and</strong> is:<br />

nslookup [options] [host] [-nameserver]<br />

Where:<br />

options These options vary widely by platform. Refer to the<br />

documentation for a specific implementation for information<br />

about what options are available.<br />

host The host name or <strong>IP</strong> address to be located.<br />

-nameserver The name server to which the query is to be directed.<br />

dig<br />

dig st<strong>and</strong>s for Domain Internet Groper, <strong>and</strong> enables you to exercise name<br />

servers, gather large volumes of domain name information, <strong>and</strong> execute simple<br />

domain name queries. The typical syntax for the dig comm<strong>and</strong> is:<br />

dig @server [options] [name] [type] [class] [queryopt]<br />

Where:<br />

@server The DNS name server to be queried.<br />

options Valid options typically include:<br />

-b address The source <strong>IP</strong> address of the query-to<br />

address.<br />

-c class The query class. By default, this is IN<br />

(Internet), but other valid class names<br />

include CS (CSNET), CH (CHAOS), <strong>and</strong> HS<br />

(Hesiod).<br />

-f filename Causes dig to operate in batch mode, <strong>and</strong><br />

specifies the file from which the batch<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>s can be found.
