Messages sent between SNMP agents <strong>and</strong> managers use a Protocol Data Unit<br />

(PDU) preceded by the SNMP header. The header specifies the version of<br />

SNMP being used, as well as authentication credentials. The PDU contains<br />

information regarding the type of request or response contained in the PDU, <strong>and</strong><br />

in the case of a response, the actual value of the queried objects. The SNMP<br />

message format is illustrated in Figure 17-4.<br />

This format is defined in RFC 1157, <strong>and</strong> the fields are defined as follows:<br />

Version Indicates the version of SNMP being used (valid values are<br />

1, 2, <strong>and</strong> 3).<br />

Community The SNMP community to which the request is directed, or<br />

from which the response originated.<br />
