Chapter 2. Network interfaces<br />

This chapter provides an overview of the protocols <strong>and</strong> interfaces that allow<br />

<strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> traffic to flow over various kinds of physical networks. <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong>, as an<br />

internetwork protocol suite, can operate over a vast number of physical<br />

networks. The most common <strong>and</strong> widely used of these protocols is, of course,<br />

Ethernet. The number of network protocols that have provisions for natively<br />

supporting <strong>IP</strong> is clearly beyond the scope of this redbook. However, we provide a<br />

summary of some of the different networks most commonly used with <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong>.<br />

Although this chapter primarily discusses the data link layer of the OSI model<br />

(see 1.2.5, “The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model” on<br />

page 20), it also provides some relevant physical layer technology.<br />
