Chapter 15. Mail applications<br />

Electronic mail (e-mail) is probably the most widely used <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> application in<br />

the Internet community today. For most people, it has become an integral part of<br />

everyday life, <strong>and</strong> it serves as the primary communication vehicle for most<br />

businesses. This chapter provides an overview of the <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> application<br />

protocols dealing with electronic mail, including:<br />

► Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP)<br />

► Sendmail<br />

► Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)<br />

► Post Office Protocol (POP)<br />

► Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)<br />
