Protocol<br />

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is the de facto worldwide st<strong>and</strong>ard for<br />

providing Internet communications <strong>and</strong> advanced services on digital mobile<br />

devices, such as h<strong>and</strong>held phones, pagers, <strong>and</strong> other wireless devices. This<br />

protocol is an open, global specification that enables users of these digital<br />

devices to securely access <strong>and</strong> interact with Internet, intranet, <strong>and</strong> extranet<br />

applications <strong>and</strong> services.<br />

Many phones <strong>and</strong> PDAs currently have multimedia capabilities that include:<br />

► Retrieving e-mail<br />

► Accessing data from company databases<br />

► Executing stock trading<br />

► Paying bills<br />

► Making travel reservations<br />

► Online requests for maps <strong>and</strong> driving directions<br />

► Running other exciting applications<br />

By 2010, there will be more than 2.3 billion individual wireless subscribers<br />

worldwide, according to “World Mobile Subscriber Markets 2005,” 1 with 1.1 billion<br />

of those subscribers using third generation (3G) services. As technologies<br />
