The time was, when manufacturers paid comparatively little attention to the smaller
losses that occurred in their mills and factories. Competition was not severe, and it
was not considered necessary to keep a watchful eye on the innumerable small leaks
through which profits escaped. It is doubtful, indeed, if many of these losses were

properly appreciated, and perhaps many of them were not even perceived. Now, how-
ever, all these things are changed. Competition in all lines of manufacturing has increased
tremendously, and the narrow margins on which business must be done make
the most trifling losses worthy of serious consideration ; and it has been well said that
the word " waste " is rapidly becoming obsolete. Things that were formerly regarded
