Hurshman, Cyrus Myers, Thomas "Woods, and three unidentified men were killed. R.<br />
W. Carew was fatally wounded, aud W. II. Dickey, Aaron B. Johnson, ('. J. Pellman,<br />
Jolni Hal|)li, I). H. Handolj)h, Edward Ross, Gilbert Childrcs, Evans Freeman, William<br />
Henry, James Howard, Charles Jackson, AVilliam Jackson, Fred Neil, Albert Robinson,<br />
Holden Tate, Charles Thomas, and George Wasliington were bad?y scalded, and the<br />
physicians said that ten of them will die. When the flue collapsed, the rear head of<br />
the boiler also blew out, and the contents of the boiler were discharged among the in-<br />
jured persons. <strong>The</strong> Ohio had headway enough to carry her to the river i)ank, and she<br />
was made fast and attention was given to the wounded men. Two hours after the explo-<br />
sion the ^Egeiis reached the scene of the disaster, and was at once placed at the disposal<br />
of the Ohio, and the passengers were taken up the river to Cairo, where the wounded were<br />
cared for in the Marine Hospital.<br />
(124.) — On May 8th a boiler exploded in O'Brien's feather renovating establishment,<br />
in New Bremen, Ohio. Franklin Huencke, an employe, was severely scalded, and nar-<br />
rowly escaped death.<br />
(125.) — A boiler exploded in Kansas City, Mo., on May 8th, killing Edward C. Kel-<br />
leher, the fireman.<br />
(126.) — On May 8th a boiler exploded near the town of Mitchell, in Martin County,<br />
Ind. Francis Baker was fatally wounded, and three others, whose names we have not<br />
learned, were injured seriously but not fatally.<br />
(127.) — <strong>The</strong> boiler belonging to Erskine & Co., in Carbon, near Youngstown, Ohio,<br />
exploded on May 9th. William Holliday and Lawrence Ripple, who were in the boiler<br />
room at the time, were fearfully injured, and Holliday died shortly after the explosion.<br />
At last accounts Ripple was living, but it was thought that there was very little<br />
chance of his recovery. After the explosion the ruins took fire, aad the entire property<br />
would have been destroyed but for the prompt action of Foreman Geddes, under whose<br />
direction the fire was soon controlled.<br />
(128.) — On May 10th the electric light station in La Junta, Col., was utterly de-<br />
stroyed by the explosion of one of the boilers. Not a vestige of the large building was left<br />
standing. It was valued at $20,000. Charles Shepard, the night engineer, was blown<br />
100 feet away, striking against a large flouring mill. He was terribly injured, and died<br />
in about ten minutes. Lester Edmunds was struck by flying debris, and may die. One<br />
of the boilers was hurled entirely through the La Junta planing mill, 100 feet away,<br />
destroying a heavy planer in its course. <strong>The</strong> damage to this mill is estimated at $3,000.<br />
(129.)— By the explosion of a boiler in a factory in Sheboygan, Mich., on May 11th,<br />
Herman Schultz, the fireman, was badly scalded about the face and hands.<br />
(130.)— On May 12th two Ijoilers exploded at Lawrence Sz Moore's colliery, Mahanoy<br />
Plane, Pa. <strong>The</strong> explosion displaced five other boilers, and wrecked the boiler-house<br />
completely. <strong>The</strong> less was estimated at $3,000.<br />
(131.) — Four persons were killed and several injured on May 13th by the explosion of<br />
the boiler of engine No. 948 of the Philadelphia & Reading railroad, at Lebanon, Pa.<br />
<strong>The</strong> killed are Levi Yocum, John Yocum, George SoUiday, and Willie Loudon. Wil-<br />
liam Anspach was fatally injured, and his daughter Annie, who had just brought her<br />
father's dinner, was also seriously and perhaps fatally injured. George Seller and Isaac<br />
Beard were seriously hurt, and several persons who were half a block away received<br />
minor injuries.
