"I foresee no such time...”<br />

"You shall!" exclaimed Tario, hotly. "Because you told me<br />

what I wanted to know—that even the future you divine is<br />

alterable—in accordance with human will! I, Tario, shall<br />

mould that future destiny of Barsoom even as you mould your<br />

tiny cups of clay!"<br />

"It is possible," admitted Ranas Ghol, "but not advisable."<br />

Tario turned to stare at him again. "If it is not advisable,<br />

my friend, then why do you continue with your plans to make<br />

the Great Escarpment the defending fortress of the Holy<br />

Alliance?"<br />

Again, Ranas Ghol sighed. "How am I to explain the<br />

inexplicable?" he said. "My evaluations are not as yours. The<br />

rhythm of my race is as alien to you as is the farthest star. We<br />

of Zumor oppose many things which none of you can measure.<br />

Perhaps we, too, are selfish in a sense. Suffice it to say,<br />

Tario of Lothar, that our position as your ally is one that<br />

destiny itself forces upon us."<br />
