"Sire!" he exclaimed, daring to hope. "You have seen the<br />

only answer to this great revelation of organized human life<br />

beyond our walls! We are the master race! It is our destiny to<br />

rule them!"<br />

With a swiftness that caught Sorn completely unprepared,<br />

the royal chamber filled suddenly with half a utan of<br />

Tario's bowmen. Tall, white-skinned, fair-haired and blueeyed,<br />

they held their arrows already in drawn bows, ready to<br />

propel the unerring missiles straight into Sorn's wildly<br />

beating heart.<br />

"No, my Jeddak!' sh shrieked, falling to his knees. "Spare<br />

me !"<br />

Tario's handsome face registered a cold and deadly smile.<br />

"I do not approve of your choice of pronouns, Sorn. It is my<br />

destiny to rule Barsoom, not yours! All of you shall be my<br />

chosen adjutants and as such your rewards and positions of<br />

power will be adequate to satisfy your wildest dreams. Now<br />

get back onto your feet!"<br />

As Sorn slowly arose, the bowmen lowered their<br />

weapons. They waited a few moments longer and then filed<br />

silently from the chamber like the phantom creations of<br />

Tario's mentality that they were. Once out of sight, they<br />

vanished into the nothingness from which from which they<br />

had sprung.<br />

Both Tario and Sorn knew this. Yet both knew that the<br />

arrows of these phantoms could kill—because their effectiveness<br />

depended upon the power of Tario's mind.<br />

And of that there could be no doubt...<br />

Yet there were two things which caused Tario at least<br />

the annoyance of a haunting doubt as he prepared to seat<br />

himself at the fascinating game board of world conquest.<br />

One of these matters concerned his bowmen. For many<br />

centuries he had brought them into phantom existence<br />

whenever the need for them arose. In as much as their<br />
