"AND WE ARE DONE. YOU AND I!"<br />

DAWN had not yet come to Lothar ere the furtive<br />

shadow of a one man scout ship passed above its walls. There<br />

was no air patrol, nor had an organized sentinel system as yet<br />

been established. It was too soon after the battle.<br />

Kar Komak could not know of the great battle which had<br />

been fought in Lothar the previous afternoon and half through<br />

the night. He could only observe a few torches here and there<br />

in the streets, and the presence of thoats in many of the<br />

courtyards forewarned him of the occupancy of green men.<br />

At first, he had approached the city warily, but after a<br />

brief examination of it, he arrived at the conclusion that<br />

perhaps only a few square haads surrounding the central<br />

portion were inhabited. Therefore, he circled it and came in<br />

low over the deserted eastern section. Both moons had gone<br />

below the horizon and the night was conveniently obscure as<br />

he brought his flier in upon a rooftop and moored it there to<br />

await his return.<br />

Cauatiously, he advance toward the center of the city on<br />

foot, keeping to the narrower streets which would be less<br />

likely to be frequented by the present inhabitants. As he drew<br />

nearer to his goal, he became certain that the great palace,<br />

formerly occupied by Tario, was again the center of activities.<br />

Also, he was aware of something intangible different<br />
