Tario, however, continued to smile. "At last you have<br />

revealed fallibility." he answered. "You think that I fear this<br />

rumored Tharos Pthan. Know you not that certain spies at<br />

Lothar have already apprised me of his coming? Fighting<br />

ships are already in search of the small flier on which he<br />

travels."<br />

Ranas Ghol looked up at Tario sternly. "And did they tell<br />

you of his pilot?" he asked.<br />

"No. They did not attach any importance to the other."<br />

Tario tensed. "Don't tell me he travels in company with the<br />

Warlord, himself!"<br />

"No. Not the Warlord."<br />

Tario sprang from the dais and ran to the Zumorian's<br />

side. "Speak!" he commanded. "Tell me the identity of the<br />

other!"<br />

"There are certain elements of the future which may not<br />

be revealed," countered the Zumorian. "You will have to find<br />

out for yourself."<br />

Tario fumed in his frustration. "I told you before," he<br />

said, "that my will alone is equal to the forces of destiny! so<br />

do not waggle your dire foreboding at me, Ranas Ghol!"<br />

Zithad leaned over the table. he pleaded with the Zumorian.<br />

"You are wise beyond all men," he said. "Tell me what I<br />

should do. Where should my allegiance lie?"<br />

Ranas Ghol sighed. "With yourself, Zithad. Follow the<br />

dictates of your own reason."<br />

"You speak of monsters!" laughed Tario, addressing<br />

Zithad. "Here sits the king of them all! He lies in his growing<br />

web of destinies like a great, deadly spider, planning and<br />

plotting, dabbling with the future, playing upon the emotions<br />

and desires of men with fiendish deliberation. He knows what<br />

will happen to us all! He thinks he knows! He thinks we are<br />

falling into a trap of our own devising and he would see us<br />

destroyed!"<br />

"What say you to that accusation?" asked Zithad of the<br />
