furrowed in dark trepidation. "Tars Tarkas," he said, "I will<br />

tell you what I have already told my special attack group<br />

today. Barsoom is divided between two greatly opposed<br />

ideologies, and there is a third great cause—a compromise<br />

between the two. We must fight for the right to directly<br />

examine and control the actions of the Holy Alliance. We<br />

must fight for a truce between men's minds—so that the<br />

leaders of Barsoom may decide this issue once and for<br />

all—here, at Tarnath."<br />

As the Warlord spoke, Var Koros drew in close on his<br />

smaller mount. It was he who answered for Tars Tarkas.<br />

"Well spoken!" he commented, gravely. "Though Issus<br />

may have returned to us, it is well that in this hour of fulfillment<br />

all mankind shall be satisfied concerning the confirmed<br />

status of the reformed religion."<br />

By this time, the white apes bearing La had drawn in<br />

close and set her litter upon the ground. Instantly, she sprang<br />

out and ran toward Tarzan, throwing herself into his arms.<br />

"Beloved!" she cried. "At last we have found our true<br />

destiny! Do you not see that it was written thus?" She forgot,<br />

in her ardor, to use the language of the first men, speaking to<br />

him instead in the tongue of Barsoom.<br />

Var Koros and Tars Tarkas surveyed Tarzan carefully.<br />

"She has called him Tharos Pthan," said Var Koros.<br />

"A seeming mate for Issus," added Tars Tarkas, "if he be<br />

that stranger who slew white apes and green men with his<br />

bare hands and killed the mad zitidar at Lothar."<br />

Tarzan thrust La from him and suddenly frowned at all of<br />
