found his war to Tario's throne room. Beyond this, adjoining<br />

the departed jeddak's private chambers, was the precious<br />

room he sought.<br />

Ever he approached this place, his extra-sensory perception<br />

brought him a more insistent awareness of her. He could<br />

swear that she was there in living, breathing reality—an<br />

incredible miracle, yet undeniable!<br />

In his mind he had made her tall, lithe, strong and proud,<br />

with raven black hair in contrast to the light auburn hair of the<br />

typical Lotharian. Moreover, he had insisted on having to win<br />

her. She was not to be but the reflection of his secret yearnings,<br />

such as one who would cling to him in helpless devotion.<br />

She would have clear, blue eyes which would reflect a mind<br />

and character of her own. Yet, she would not be such a<br />

completed product that there would be no room left for<br />

improvement. On the contrary, she would be almost a savage<br />

who would be tamed by the beast of virility and mellowed by<br />

the elixir of undying devotion.<br />

With such thoughts and emotions as these, Kar Komak<br />

at last entered Tario's former sleeping quarters and stepped<br />

at once to the secret door of the hidden chamber. With the<br />

pounding of his heart almost at an audible level, he placed his<br />

ear to the cold, ponderous stone and strained with every<br />

faculty of his mind to penetrate beyond—to discover some<br />

positive proof that she lived.<br />

As he did so, his great sword clanked loudly against the<br />

door. And in response, he heard a distant, muffled cry—the<br />

cry of a woman! It had issued from inside the secret room!<br />

His eyes widened. Cold perspiration poured from his<br />

trembling body.<br />

"She lives!" he shouted, exultantly. "Most adored<br />

ancestors!—she lives!"<br />

It was then, in the very moment that he prepared to<br />

spring wide the great stone door, that three red warriors<br />
