Tarzan on Mars<br />

princess—to be my mate.<br />

She raised her brows. "You created me!" Then she<br />

laughed. "Not unless you are as old as Thuria—"<br />

Tarzan had understood nothing of this conversation<br />

except the man's name, and suddenly he remembered where<br />

he had heard it before.<br />

"Kar Komak!" he exclaimed, unable to express himself<br />

further. This was the man who had taught John Carter the<br />

secret of teleportation. A white-skinned Lotharian—a mental<br />

creation. Perhaps, then, this Tario of the distant tower was a<br />

Lotharian, too, and Kar Komak would know of him.<br />

When the apeman spoke his name, Kar Komak turned<br />

his full attention back upon him. When he looked at Tarzan's<br />

hunting knife, he finally decided in favor of the warrior's code,<br />

after all, and threw his sword aside contemptuously. Drawing<br />

his dagger, he sprang from the dias.<br />

"Die!" he shouted.<br />

But Tarzan was not yet ready to die—nor did he intend<br />

killing his adversary, who had suddenly become precious to<br />

him. He did not even draw his knife, nor did he move from<br />

his position.<br />

Instead, he caught Kar Komak's wrist in one hand and his<br />

throat in the other. His superior strength instantly eliminated<br />

the possibility of a contest. Kar Komak simply met an<br />

irresistible force and came to an abrupt stop. The unimaginable<br />

pressure on his wrist deadened the nerves of his hand so<br />

that he dropped the dagger. The other hand, on his throat,<br />

pressed just hard enough to promise instant death, should he<br />

attempt further violence.<br />

Yet he strained with all his might, pulling at the mighty<br />

arm with his free hand. But he might as well have fought with<br />

a stone statue.<br />

"What manner of man are you!" he gasped. "John Carter,<br />

himself, would be but a child in your hands!"<br />

"He is Tharos Pthan," said La, proudly. She was about to<br />
