"I can't quite place the role of these curious beings, the<br />

Zumorians, however," added Vad Varo.<br />

"It is immaterial," retorted Carthoris. "As men of honor,<br />

we know what roles we have to play in this!"<br />

"I had given the whole problem considerable thought,"<br />

said Kar Komak, "while serving in the army of the Holy<br />

Alliance at Tarnath. Granted, this is a deception, does not the<br />

fact still remain that something should be decided about religious<br />

reform—for the people of Barsoom? What a marvelous<br />

twist against the false prophets of Tarnath it would be if we<br />

could bring into reality the reforms—affecting the River Iss<br />

and the Sea of Korus—which they have promised the world!"<br />

Vad Varo chuckled. "What an ironical trap for them, now<br />

that they have the masses of civilization worked up to fever<br />

pitch, if a true Tharos Pthan could appear on the scene! The<br />

people, alone, would be strength enough for him to overthrow<br />

the whole empire of the Holy Alliance!"<br />

At that moment, a messenger presented himself at the<br />

prince's cabin.<br />

"Sire, the flight dwar wishes to report sighting something<br />

of interest below, which might be connected with the man<br />

you seek."<br />

Carthoris saluted the young officer and rose to his feet,<br />

signalling the other two to follow him. In a few words, he<br />

acquainted Kar Komak with the purpose of their present<br />

mission.<br />

When they reached the railing outside, the huge cruiser<br />

was already lowering toward the ground near an expanse of<br />

hills and valleys.<br />

"There below, sire," said the dwar, who was second in<br />

command of the fleet under Carthoris, "near the entrance to<br />

that small canyon."<br />

"Ah yes! I can make out the carcasses of some white<br />

apes," said Carthoris.<br />

"Probably attacked by banths, remarked Kar Komak.<br />
