and lustily in their chosen sport and profession.<br />

At last, La noticed Va Caraways' persistent surveillance<br />

of her and she revolted. "Why do you stare at me so?" she<br />

cried. "What is it your eyes would tell me, Va Caraways?"<br />

"True power," he answered, "has a beneficial effect upon<br />

a true leader—in that it humbles that leader into a realization<br />

of his responsibilities to others.<br />

She shrugged her gleaming white shoulders and tossed<br />

her head disdainfully, throwing raven black tresses across her<br />

shapely back. "Shall you speak in parables to me?" she said. "I<br />

do not understand you."<br />

"Don't you?" He glared at her. "Then I will make my<br />

thoughts quite clear to you, La. Look at me!"<br />

Strangely fascinated by him, she looked into his penetrating<br />

eyes as he spoke to her intensely, rapidly, with a positive<br />

tone of wisdom and authority the source of which she could<br />

not define.<br />

"I will analyze yourself and your situation for you so that<br />

you may have a basis for the judgement of your acts. You sit<br />

now on the prow of a juggernaut which can destroy or work<br />

salvation in the destinies of men. Here are three hundred<br />

thousand savage green men, tens of thousands of the Lost<br />

People, and hundred of thousands of red and yellow men,<br />

armed and ready to do your bidding or to achieve their own<br />

ambitions. You have attracted both the sincere and the<br />

fanatics and others who do not support the religious cause or<br />

who are too dim-witted to grasp such a concept. Your personal<br />

ambition has led you to influence men by telling them<br />

you will lead them to the last battleground—the greatest<br />

battle ever fought—that there will be justice, loot, rewards<br />

and food, according to their desires. In the midst of it all, La,<br />

you are actually fearful of the magnitude of the thing which<br />

you have set in motion. You find yourself a lone woman<br />
