personage which the chariot contained.<br />

As soon as this vehicle appeared on the scene, the green<br />

warrior who rode the zitidar turned, as though listening to<br />

someone within the chariot. The old man could not observe<br />

the nature of the passenger because of a low canopy of<br />

gorgeous silks which cast the interior of the vehicle into deep<br />

shadow, but that some word of command had been issued was<br />

evidenced by the fact that the green warrior turned about and<br />

raised a peculiar cry to the advanced battalions fighting below.<br />

Immediately, some sign of truce was made among the<br />

contenders, and the battle at the edge of the city subsided. It<br />

appeared that both sides were willing to await the arrival of<br />

the chariot for some reason.<br />

Taking advantage of the lull in the fighting, the old man<br />

hastened downward from the hill, anxious to be on hand when<br />

the mysterious chariot arrived.<br />

Thus it was that Var Koros of Tarnath came upon La of<br />

Opar, who was known to her numerous followers on Barsoom<br />

as the Goddess of the Son. And that both of them should meet<br />

in the valley of the Lost People was again one of those<br />

mysterious coincidences which would seem to ascribe the<br />

workings of destiny to more than blind force alone.<br />

For here, also, lived Kar Komak, the Lotharian...<br />

When Var Koros arrived within hailing distance of the<br />

Lost People, there were several of their number who recognized<br />

him. Although the golden chariot had now arrived in<br />

their midst and their leaders were engaged in a conference,<br />

those who recognized him turned at once toward him and<br />

cried out his name in tones of wonder and gladness.<br />

"Var Koros!" they shouted, attraction the attention of the<br />

others. "Var Koros has returned!"<br />

Immediately the attention of the Lost People as well as<br />

that of the invaders turned to the old man. Or, at least, there<br />

was nothing else for the strangers to do but to witness this<br />
