Tarzan on Mars<br />

startled, listening. Kar Komak heard it, too.<br />

From afar off it came, echoing faintly out of the dim<br />

vastness of the empty sea bottoms—the long drawn out cry<br />

of some nameless beast such as had never been heard before<br />

in all the history of Barsoom. It was a sound that plucked at<br />

the long forgotten cords of racial memory and caused a<br />

prickly, chilling sensation to touch one's spine.<br />

Thoats squealed in the caravan behind them. Many of the<br />

great white apes answered that distant cry with restless,<br />

rumbling growls. The zitidar, looming darkly in front of them,<br />

raised up its head and bellowed.<br />

"In the name of my first ancestor!" Kar Komak exclaimed.<br />

"What is that?"<br />

La rose to her feet and he followed her. His arm,<br />

touching hers, detected that she was cold and trembling. He<br />

saw her look out at the world with the face of one who has<br />

seen ghost.<br />

"Do you know what it is?" he asked her.<br />

After a long moment, she answered, "I am almost afraid<br />

to say that I do, because I am not sure the thing I am thinking<br />

is possible." Then she looked up quickly into his eyes and he<br />

saw in her beautiful face such an expression of despair and<br />

longing as no man had ever witnessed. "But I must know!" he<br />

exclaimed. "I must!"<br />
