TO <strong>THE</strong> GOLDEN THRONE<br />

AS Tarzan cleared the battlements he alighted on a wide<br />

catwalk mounted on scaffolding behind the great wall and<br />

found himself quite alone. But a sight met his eyes which<br />

convinced him at once of the identity of the strange red<br />

panthan who had preceded him on the malagor.<br />

On a ramp below him he discerned that same warrior,<br />

with his back to the wall, holding off a dozen attackers with<br />

his lightning swift blade. Even as he took in the scene, he<br />

noticed the main body of the garrison rushing toward the lone<br />

swordsman from another direction. The situation seemed<br />

hopeless for him, yet he glared at his opponents in triumph as<br />

though he knew that nothing could stop him.<br />

As though to confirm his suspicions, Tarzan heard one of<br />

the guards cry out, "It is the Warlord, himself!"<br />

"Look!" cried another, pointing to Tarzan. "That one has<br />

scaled the outer wall without the aid of a malagor!"<br />

As yet another raised a radium rifle to fire upon him,<br />

John Carter shouted, even as he continued to duel with his<br />

opponents, "Wait! Would you fire upon the genuine Tharos<br />

Pthan?"<br />

There was a very brief lull in the fighting as many<br />

stopped to look back and upwards at the mighty figure of the<br />

apeman who stood there on the catwalk like an avenging<br />
