Tarzan on Mars<br />

As though in a trance, La said, "There was a man—I<br />

remember. A white man in a great tower, far away from here.<br />

Perhaps it was he—"<br />

Tarzan tensed slowly, his gray eyes burning down into<br />

hers. "You must remember this man, La. Who is he? What is<br />

his name? And where is this tower?"<br />

"His name?—Tario. He brought me here. I think this<br />

palace was his—but now he lives in the distant tower. It<br />

reaches far up into the sky."<br />

"La—where is this tower?" Tarzan insisted.<br />

It was then that Las recovered fromn shock, but her<br />

heart had been seared by a white-hot bolt of lightning, and<br />

there was nothing left to sustain her but one emotion. Her<br />

face whitened with it and her lips thinned out flat against her<br />

gleaming teeth.<br />

"Your mate!" she snarled. "She is my fate! Thief of my<br />

days! Destroyer of my life! Why did she have to be born! I<br />

hope she is dead!"<br />

Tarzan frowned. "Take care, La—"<br />

La's eyes widened, her lips curling in a glad smile of<br />

hope. "Yes! Dead!" she cried. "Dead! If she is dead, then the<br />

way is yet clear!" She raised her voice in a wild shriek. "Dead!<br />

Dead! Dead! I hope she is dead!'<br />

The apeman sprang upon her with a low growl and<br />

grasped her by the throat. La struggled instinctively in his<br />

titanic grip, and suddenly fear sprang into her face as she saw<br />

the terrible threat of death in his blazing eye.<br />

"Tarzan!' she cried out. "Spare my life!"<br />

It was the strangeled sound of her voice that brought him<br />

out of his rage. He eased the preasure but did not release her.<br />

"You will not speak of my mate like that!" he told her,<br />

fiercely. "I have been your friend and protector, La, but such<br />

a thing I will not tolerate—even from you!"<br />

La slumped against him, bursting into tears. "La is<br />

sorry!" she wailed, clenching her fists against his chest. "But<br />
