Tarzan on Mars<br />

time he had grasped the dismounted rider's lance, which he<br />

hurled at a charging adversary. The point of the huge weapon<br />

passed through the green man's deep chest and he fell dead<br />

at Tarzan's feet.<br />

To avoid a windmill blow from another sword, he ducked<br />

again under a passing thoat and overturned it; but this time<br />

the rider jumped free in time to avoid being pinned down, and<br />

without an instant's hesitation, he leaped upon Tarzan,<br />

seeking to overcome him with his bare hands.<br />

As though this method of attack were a signal for the<br />

others, fully five of the giant brutes leaped upon him. Tarzan<br />

struck at them, breaking heads, necks, limbs and dealing out<br />

death with the ferocity and strength of a demon, but still they<br />

came grasping at him, striking back and finally overcoming<br />

him with the sheer weight of insurmountable numbers.<br />

At last he went down beneath them as the flat of a sword<br />

struck his head, causing him to lose consciousness—but not<br />

before he had left on the field of battle two dead thoats and<br />

five dead Torquasian warriors. All of which, his astounded<br />

captors noted, he had accomplished with his bare hands!<br />

Thus began the saga that was eventually to earn Tarzan<br />

of the Apes another name—a certain legendary name that was<br />

to shake the foundations of Barsoomian civilization...<br />

"The observatory of Helium insists that this is the area.<br />

They have recorded two infra-radiation trails at this point. If<br />

a space rocket actually did crash on Barsoom, it is reasonable<br />

to think that its occupant might have effected a separate<br />

landing in a smaller vehicle."<br />

The speaker was Carthoris, who stood on the deck of a<br />

mighty aerial dreadnought of Helium. The huge, heavily<br />

armed ship, escorted by twenty other large fighting craft,<br />

glided low above the great sea bottom, its observers scanning<br />

the entire area for signs of the visitor from Earth.<br />

In other time, Carthoris and a few of his friends might<br />
