add that he was the legendary mate of Issus, meaning<br />

herself—but then she remembered Jane Clayton. She also<br />

remembered the words of Var Koros, who said, "The resurrected<br />

Issus already sits upon her throne in the Sacred<br />

Worlds...” She remembered Tarnath, and Tario, who had<br />

brought her here. Jane Clayton had also looked into the<br />

diadem, and now she was here in this world. Could it be<br />

possible, La asked herself in growing consternation, that the<br />

other Issus was none other than Tarzan's mate?<br />

"I am Issus!" she cried out.<br />

By this time, Tarzan had lightened his hold on Kar<br />

Komak, and both men looked at her in mild surprise because<br />

of the shocking expression of jealous rage and frustration on<br />

her face.<br />

"La," said Tarzan, "calm yourself. I know of this man. He<br />

is important to me. You must help me question him. But first,<br />

what is he to you? He seems to know you—in fact, it appears<br />

he is in love with you."<br />

If Kar Komak was surprised to hear animal growls and<br />

barking issue from the mouth of Tarzan, he was stupefied<br />

with astonishment to hear his beloved princess answer him<br />

in the same manner.<br />

She tossed her dark hair back over her shoulder,<br />

disdainfully. "He is a strange warrior who twice fought for<br />

me," she answered, "and now, he thinks he owns me!"<br />

Tarzan grinned. "Not a bad idea," he commented.<br />

"Somebody should own you! But ask him if he knows aught of<br />

Tario, La."<br />

Her eyes blazed defiance. "Do not taunt me, Tarzan!<br />

There are thousands here who call me Issus, and you will yet<br />

have to answer to me if you belittle my emotions. You know<br />

what they are. I have prostrated myself to you and begged you<br />

for your love. Now I am done, and it shall be the other way<br />

around. If I please, I will take you—if and when I choose!"<br />

Tarzan's gray eyes met hers steadily. "Ask Kar Komak<br />
