apes. Tarzan noted with approval that Kar Komak did not<br />

reveal a single emotion of fear or consternation at the sight of<br />

them.<br />

"Seize these two!" La shrieked. "One is an enemy, and<br />

this other whom you thought to be Tharos Pthan is an imposter!"<br />

The green men hesitated, not out of fear of Tarzan, for<br />

in spite of his terrible powers, they knew no fear, but because<br />

he had proved himself to be superhuman and their superstitious<br />

faith in his exalted identity was strong within them.<br />

Not so with Churg, however. His teacher and his deity<br />

was La. Unhesitatingly, he led his lumbering horde of<br />

towering brutes across the room toward Tarzan, who was<br />

already eyeing Kar Komak's discarded sword speculatively.<br />

The contest for authority between this Issus and Tharos<br />

Pthan was interrupted, however, by Kar Komak, who suddenly<br />

remembered that he was a Lotharian. Instantly, his half<br />

of the throne room was filled with phantom bowmen, who<br />

fitted arrows to their bows with what Tarzan considered admirable<br />

precision. As they aimed to fire upon the apes, La<br />

screamed.<br />

"NO! Spare them! You win this time, Kar Komak! But go<br />

from my sight! And take this stupid fool with you! We shall<br />

meet again, and then not even your archers will prevail<br />

against me!"<br />

"Goodbye, my princess!" he grinned. "You are right. We<br />

shall indeed meet again!" wherewith, he motioned to Tarzan<br />

and sprang up the dais and quickly passed beyond the arras.<br />

The apeman looked at La, then at the great white apes<br />

who still stood at bay before the bowmen.<br />

"Protect her," he commanded them. "If harm befalls her,<br />

you will answer to Tarzan, Mighty Hunter, Mighty Fighter!"<br />

To La, he said, "Look into your heart, La, instead of at your<br />

anger and pride. Kar Komak is not to be taken lightly. Think<br />

well before you strike!" And with this parting admonition, he<br />
