Tarzan on Mars<br />

As Jason Gridley looked up to stare at Tarzan, the latter<br />

gestured at the other piece of paper.<br />

"There's a note from Jules Carter—to you. Read that," he<br />

said, almost without expression, yet with the suggestion of an<br />

emotion which was too great to be expressed.<br />

Gridley picked up the note and read it aloud, since it had<br />

that characteristic about it which is typical of men who would<br />

rather think than make speeches. It was short and to the<br />

point:<br />

Dear Gridley:<br />

John Carter left me a sufficient compilation of<br />

Barsoomian hieroglyphics to identify the<br />

diadem's inscription unmistakably. Morphology<br />

checks with earliest classical for of the<br />

language—extreme antiquity. Deciphered as:<br />

tekonossul Issus.. Translation: Great Star of<br />

Issus...<br />

For some moments after he had read this, Gridley<br />

continued to stare at the note. His mind was racing far ahead,<br />

already dismissing the seeming miracle of so fortunate and<br />

complete an identification of the mysterious jewel from Opar,<br />

subordinating the wonder of it to the importance of its<br />

application.<br />

"The—tenth Barsoomian ray." he mused. Then he looked<br />

up. "Now, my friend, how can we tie all this in with the<br />

disappearance of your wife and of La, High Priestess of the<br />

Flaming God?"<br />

Tarzan rose and began pacing the carpeted floor like a<br />

caged lion, fascinating the eye with his swift, silent movement.<br />

"I am not myself tonight," he said, then corrected<br />

himself, with a faint, cold smile. "Or perhaps I am too much<br />

myself! Words are not with me—"<br />
