Tarzan on Mars<br />

"And I had thought, " he said, ruefully, "that I had created<br />

her, even as Tario created me."<br />

"But you love her, do you not?" asked Tarzan.<br />

"Do you love her?" he asked.<br />

The apeman smiled. "In a brotherly way, perhaps. Do not<br />

forget my main purpose in being here. My own mate is at<br />

Tarnath."<br />

"But La is in love with you!" Kar Komak insisted.<br />

"She thinks she is. I was the only man of her own kind<br />

who ever entered her lonely life, until you fought for her."<br />

Tarzan smiled again. "I would say that you had first claim<br />

upon her affections, my friend—and I can think of no better<br />

choice! However much she may seem to reject you, I know<br />

her well enough to understand that you have attracted her<br />

very much. And remember this: she needs a warrior such as<br />

you."<br />

Had Tarzan been trying to be a diplomat, he could not<br />

have accomplished more than he did by his simple frankness<br />

and sincerity in this delicate matter. From that moment on,<br />

Kar Komak was his devoted friend and ally. There is nothing<br />

more binding between male companions upon Barsoom, or<br />

perhaps on any other world, than sharing harmonious views<br />

in regard to both love and war. Each had the same objective<br />

in battle, which was Tarnath. And each had his woman to fight<br />

for.<br />

"I am left terribly confused, nevertheless," Kar Komak<br />

confessed, at last. "La might well be Issus, and you have all<br />

the appearance of Thanos Pthan. On the other hand, if this<br />

latter is true, then it would seem all the more likely that she<br />

who presently occupies the Golden Throne at Tarnath is<br />

Issus, for she is your rightful mate."<br />

"Such confusion may be eliminated," suggested Tarzan,<br />

"by cancelling out your assumptions and theories and starting<br />

afresh. you should allow the future to reveal whether or not<br />

the Legend of Issus may ever be fulfilled. I can tell you for<br />
