meeting, for the Lost People were entirely consumed by a<br />

tremendous emotion of ecstatic joy at sight of the newcomer<br />

and proceeded to surround him almost to the total exclusion<br />

of the motley horde from the outer world.<br />

La stood there at the rail of her chariot, tall, proud, and<br />

gorgeously trapped in richly jeweled leather and silks, as<br />

much the picture of a delectable goddess as any there might<br />

have been. But, recent years had brought a hardness to her<br />

beautiful face and a cold intolerance into her deep blue eyes.<br />

She surveyed the commotion with a frown of impatience, and<br />

finally she uttered a guttural, barking sound to a great white<br />

ape which stood near her.<br />

Immediately, the huge anthropoid reached out one of its<br />

four great hands and grasped a red citizen of the hidden<br />

community by the arm. Holding him unceremoniously in the<br />

air, he brought him close beside the chariot. Rather than fear,<br />

however, the man's face registered indignation. He struggled<br />

furiously.<br />

"Put me down!" he shouted.<br />

"Silence!" exclaimed La, angrily. And, as the ape's victim<br />

subsided momentarily, she continued. "La is not accustomed<br />

to being interrupted in this manner, but I am curious concerning<br />

this old man whom you greet with such reverence. Who<br />

is he?"<br />

"Make this monster set me down," scowled the man, "and<br />

I will tell you!"<br />

By this time, Var Koros had asked a similar question<br />

concerning La, and so it was that he was included in there<br />

meeting of leaders in which the identity of everybody was<br />

established.<br />

The man whom the ape had taken hold of was Mordos<br />

Val, once a famous warrior jeddak of Gathol, and who was<br />

now second only in command to that scarred giant, Sorquas<br />

Ptorel, who was the jeddak of the Lost People and the most<br />

tremendous green warrior imaginable, towering a full head<br />
