floor who had obviously been slain in order to effect her<br />

rescue, or perhaps it was the kind, but masterful, look of<br />

assurance in him, but the result of her new observation<br />

caused her to relax slightly as she studied him, startlingly<br />

similar to a trapped animal who is being offered food.<br />

"Now," said Kar Komak, 'isn't that better? I am your<br />

protector, not your nemesis!"<br />

She did not reply. He slight frown of puzzlement only<br />

deepened.<br />

It was then that Kar Komak realized his princess might<br />

have to learn to speak, as a newly hatched child. And yet,<br />

being his own mental creation, she should have a ready made<br />

memory of language to fall back on.<br />

He shrugged. Time would tell. Now that he had obtained<br />

his flier. She appeared, at last, to comprehend, for she<br />

permitted him to lead her by the hand out of the former<br />

sleeping quarters of Tario.<br />

With singing heart, he stepped into Tario's throne<br />

room—only to freeze in mid-stride, his eyes widening in<br />

sudden alarm. Behind him, the girl gasped, and he felt her<br />

hand tense in his.<br />

Facing him at the foot of the dais were a dozen giant<br />

green men wearing the leather of the bloodthirsty Torquasian<br />

hordes, then which there are none more bestial and cruel on<br />

the face of Barsoom.<br />
