<strong>THE</strong> GREAT GAMES<br />

WHEN Tarzan was chained in the dark pits of the great,<br />

ancient-looking walled city to which his captors had taken<br />

him, he noted with some surprise that a great number of<br />

normal men like himself were also chained there—except<br />

that their skins were slightly reddish in hue. There were<br />

giant green men in chains, as well, but his interest was<br />

centered principally upon the others, for they were of the<br />

race he sought, who might know of the whereabouts of<br />

Helium—and John Carter. If he could but speak their language<br />

now!<br />

He had only a moment to note their curious and somewhat<br />

astonished surveillance of him before his jailers departed,<br />

carrying their torches with them. After that, he shared<br />

with his fellow prisoners the Stygian darkness of the dreaded<br />

pits, which was a typical feature of all such subterranean jails<br />

of Barsoom. Every city on the planet possessed its pits for<br />

the enemy, which were actually labyrinthine mazes of tunnels<br />

and chambers, intricately inter-connected and often half<br />

forgotten and unexplored. His present location reminded the<br />

apeman of the subterranean catacombs of Opar except that<br />

this place had evidently been built on a much grander scale.<br />

One other detail he had noted before the torches were<br />

withdrawn, was that the other prisoners were bound with<br />
