Tarzan on Mars<br />

His mind was sorely perplexed by this incomprehensible<br />

information and his heart was laden with anger and forboding.<br />

What nonsense was this? And who was this imposter who<br />

claimed to be Tharos Pthan?<br />

By his first ancestor!—if he actually should find her in<br />

another man's arms this night, his blade would prove him to<br />

be no legendary Tharos Pthan but a creature made of mortal<br />

flesh and blood!<br />

Through La, Tarzan began to comprehend the significance<br />

of his position as that tumultuous afternoon wore on<br />

into night and the two of them were at last installed as deities<br />

in the palace of Lothar. There were seeming parallels to this<br />

situation which the apeman felt had occurred in his previous<br />

experience, where the role of witch doctor or pagan god had<br />

been forced upon him as an expedient necessary to escape, or<br />

to survival in the midst of a savage and superstitious tribe or<br />

primitive race of people.<br />

That he was underestimating his role and making a<br />

mistake by placing his situation in the latter category, only to<br />

discover, after it had become to late to correct it.. For the<br />

time being, he simply considered it advisable to act as Tharos<br />

Pthan as long as it increased his chances of helping La and as<br />

long as it promised to serve as a springboard for launching his<br />

major effort in search of Jane Clayton.<br />

Once installed in the former throne room of Tario, La<br />

ordered that the chamber be cleared, and when they were at<br />

last alone together, she threw herself into his arms.<br />

"My beloved!" she cried out. "It is impossible that you<br />

should be here with me at last in this world of the After Life,<br />

but I shall not question the fates when they are smiling upon<br />

us! I love you! For an eternity I have waited for an answer to<br />

my unknown destiny, and at last my sweet reward had some<br />

to me! At last, my Tarzan, you are mine!"<br />

The apeman was too tall for her to reach his lips, so La<br />
