Tarzan on Mars<br />

fighting man and victorious veteran of glorious battles that he<br />

was. His black hair, his steel grey eyes, brave, loyal,<br />

smiling—brought home to Tario the awareness of a dangerous<br />

strength, both of body and of spirit.<br />

Of his mind he could not yet be sure, for preliminary<br />

light probing had proved it closed to ordinary telepathic<br />

penetration. He would save a supreme thrust into that alien<br />

mental screen for later, when he was ready to leave.<br />

"Ah, yes!" said John Carter. "There is trouble brewing<br />

once more along the sea bottoms. Well, at least you shall be<br />

satisfied with food and drink before we go into that. Come!"<br />

For one who had remained secluded from humanity for<br />

entire millennia of time, this emergence of Tario from his<br />

cloistered halls of philosophy and etherialism. Its people were<br />

far more numerous that he had imagined. They were brave,<br />

intelligent, scientifically far advanced, and amazingly selfsufficient.<br />

But, if all that he saw impressed him, it did not<br />

dismay. On the contrary, it intrigued him and only served to<br />

crystallize his original desire of conquest into a clear, cold<br />

flame of purpose.<br />

In the hypnotic disguise of Tars Tarkas, he met them<br />

all—Tardos Mors, Jeddak of Greater Helium, Mors Kajak, Jed<br />

of Lesser Helium, Gahan of Gathol and his beautiful wife,<br />

Tara of Helium, sister to Carthoris.<br />

That same Carthoris, son of the Warlord, who had first<br />

awakened Tario to the existence of the living world outside<br />

of Lothar, Stood there beside his illustrious sire, almost<br />

equally as formidable a warrior. Beside him was Thuvia, his<br />

wife, formerly that same fair Princess of Ptarth who had<br />

awakened in him the life blood of the man who had wasted<br />

centuries of virility in ethereal dreaming.<br />

However great her attraction still remained for Tario at<br />

this moment, it was eclipsed by the celestial beauty of the<br />

even more queenly woman who stood beside her, smiling at<br />

him in sincere greeting to the friend of her husband. He<br />
