Weight Control on a Heart-Healthy Eating Plan
Balancing calorie intake with regular physical
activity can help individuals achieve or
maintain a healthy weight. For individuals
who are overweight, even modest amounts of
weight loss of approximately 10 percent of
initial body weight can have health benefits.
Weight loss can lower high blood pressure,
high blood cholesterol levels, and high blood
sugar levels. Reducing these risk factors helps
to prevent cardiovascular disease and/or decrease
its severity in those with existing disease.
To maintain or lose weight, it is important
to watch the types and amounts of food
consumed. In general:
■ Begin the day with a hearty breakfast to
provide energy and nutrients, and to
jump-start metabolism.
■ Control calories by eating smaller meals
spaced throughout the day rather than eating
one or two large meals.
