Outcome indicators are the second type of
measurement used in the Hearts N’ Parks
program. These data demonstrate a program’s
success in achieving important outcomes.
While activity indicators keep track of “how
many,” outcome indicators give us an
understanding of “what happened.” Outcomes
are the participant benefits that may be
acquired during or after their involvement
with a Hearts N’ Parks program.
As informative as activity indicators can be,
they are not as meaningful as outcome indicators.
There is a difference between a person who
picks up the “Achieving Your Healthy Weight
Tip Sheet” and the person who actually loses
weight.
Outcome indicators may include:
■ The number of people who improved their
knowledge about heart-healthy behavior.
■ The percentage of people who changed their
attitudes toward a healthy diet.
■ The increase in the number of people who
engage in the recommended amount of
physical activity per week.
