108 Command Element (CE)<br />

Radio Battalion<br />

The mission of the radio battalion is to provide tactical signals<br />

intelligence (SIGINT), ground-based electronic attack (EA),<br />

communications security (COMSEC) monitoring, and special<br />

intelligence (SI) communication support to the MAGTF.<br />

Intelligence Battalion<br />

Activated in October 1989 at Camp Pendleton, Ca, as 1 st<br />

Intelligence Company, 1 st Surveillance Reconnaissance<br />

Intelligence Group (SRIG), and redesigned in November 1998 as<br />

1 st Reconnaissance Battalion. The intelligence organizes, trains,<br />

and equips task organized intelligence detachments for service<br />

with MAGTFs or other commanders as directed.<br />

Force Reconnaissance Company<br />

The mission of the force reconnaissance company is to conduct<br />

amphibious reconnaissance, surveillance, and limited-scale raids in<br />

support of the MEF, other MAGTFs, or JTFs as directed.<br />

Communication Battalion<br />

The mission of the communication battalion is to provide<br />

communications and information systems support to MARFOR<br />

component headquarters and MAGTF CEs.<br />

108.2 Discuss the concept of supporting and supported relationships.<br />

Command relationships are not necessarily identical for all elements of the MAGTF.<br />

Although the terms OPCON and TACON are often used in joint and combined<br />

operations, they are not used to establish command relationships between <strong>Marine</strong> units<br />

within the MAGTF. Rather, relationships established within the MAGTF are framed in<br />

terms of either command or support. Elements of a MAGTF may be organic to the<br />

MAGTF, attached, or tasked to provide support. When a <strong>Marine</strong> unit is under the<br />

command of a senior <strong>Marine</strong> unit, the subordinate <strong>Marine</strong> unit is either organic or<br />

attached. Support relationships are established when one element or unit of the MAGTF<br />

provides a required capability to another element. These relationships do not imply<br />

tactical missions or techniques of employment. Although the terms “organic” and<br />

“attach” apply consistently throughout the MAGTF, support relationships can differ in<br />

meaning.<br />

A support relationship is normally identified by the MAGTF commander when planning<br />

missions for the subordinate elements of the MAGTF. The element of the force making<br />

the main effort is designated as the supported element; other elements are designated as<br />

supporting. Each support relationship is designed by the MAGTF commander to fit the<br />

situation at hand. A supporting-supported relationship allows required support to be<br />

provided by one element of the MAGTF to another without the need to change existing<br />
