1. Every Concept in an Extension:<br />

• Must be a subtype descendant of an International <strong>Release</strong> Concept:<br />

• This descent may be indirect, passing through Concepts in either the Containing-Extension or a<br />

Dependee-Extension.<br />

2. Every Description in an Extension:<br />

• Must apply to a Concept, in the one of the following Namespaces: the Containing-Extension, the<br />

International <strong>Release</strong> or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

3. Every defining Relationship in an Extension:<br />

• Must define a sourceId which refers to a Concept in the Containing-Extension.<br />

• In exceptional circumstances, an Extension may add additional defining attributes to a Concept in<br />

the International <strong>Release</strong> or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

• Must have typeId which refers to a Concept, in the one of the following Namespaces: the<br />

Containing-Extension, the International <strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

• Must have a destinationId which refers to a Concept, in the one of the following Namespaces: the<br />

Containing-Extension, the International <strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

4. A Reference Set in an Extension:<br />

• May include references to components and derivatives in any of the following Namespaces: the<br />

Containing-Extension, the International <strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

5. The enumerated values used in RF2 components that form part of an Extension must be all be represented<br />

by metadata Concepts that are present in one of the following Namespaces: the Containing-Extension,<br />

the International <strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

The following additional rules are only relevant to Extensions represented using <strong>Release</strong> <strong>Format</strong> 1:<br />

• Subsets in an Extension:<br />

• May include as its members Components from the following Namespaces: the Containing-Extension,<br />

the International <strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

• May refer to other Subsets in the following Namespaces: the Containing-Extension, the International<br />

<strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

• Cross Map Sets in an Extension:<br />

• May provide maps for Concepts from the following Namespaces: the Containing-Extension, the<br />

International <strong>Release</strong>, or a Dependee-Extension.<br />

2.3.3.6. Transfer of Responsibility between Organizations<br />

When the need arises to transfer components (Concepts, Descriptions, Relationships) from the International<br />

<strong>Release</strong> content to an Extension, from an Extension to the International <strong>Release</strong>, or from one Extension to<br />

another, conversation and coordination between the sending and receiving organizations is needed. In some<br />

cases, entire tables may be transferred - not just individual components.<br />

It should be noted that the transfer of components among Extensions, or between an Extension and the<br />

International <strong>Release</strong>, is subject to the terms of the IHTSDO Affiliate License and, within an IHTSDO Member<br />

country, may also be subject to the terms of that Member's <strong>SNOMED</strong> CT national license .<br />
