undoubtedly also H. appendiculata) but differ in having smaller
spores (16-20 (24) X 7-8 p) and in general possessing more lateral
appendages than the typical H. appendiculata; often 5-6 (7) slightly
frayed appendages, 7-15 p in length, radiating from the septum. The
terminal appendages are 20-40 p in length (Fig. 9c). However, in all
collections spores with appendages showing the typical spoonshaped
base were found. Perithecia diameter (155)-225-300 p, beak conical,
40-80 X 22-32 p. Centrum characters as for the typical H. appendiculata.
J. KOHLMEYER (personal communication) reports similar
collections from Spain and considers this species to be close to
H. appendiculata) but not typical for the species.
Not infrequent in wood at the base of the dunes and in wood at
the water's edge.

Perithecia about 0.25 mm in diameter, globose with beak, immersed
to protruding, dark. Asci 8-spored, clavate, unitunicate, 132-168 X
32-36 u . Ascospores 2-celled, hyaline, 28-32 X 8-11 p, with terminal
and lateral appendages (Fig. 9d).
Frequent on wood at base of dune and on driftwood from water's
edge.
