Nazianzus as one of the Four Eastern Doctors of the Church.<br />
He died on 2 May 373 AD.<br />
St Gregory of Nazianzus<br />
Born in 329 AD, St Gregory was the son of the bishop of<br />
Nazianzus in the region of Cappadocia, today part of Turkey.<br />
At this time, it was a region within the territory of the Eastern<br />
Roman Empire in Anatolia.As the son of a bishop, St Gregory<br />
received an excellent education at the University of Athens. It<br />
was here that he met the future saint Basil the Great. He also<br />
studied alongside the young noble who would become better<br />
known to history as the Roman emperor, <strong>Julian</strong> the Apostate.<br />
After finishing his studies St Gregory became a monk at<br />
Pontus with his friend St Basil the Great. When his father<br />
reached the age of eighty, St Gregory returned to Nazianzus<br />
to help him in his work and in running the family estate. It was<br />
whilst he was helping his father that he was persuaded to become<br />
a priest, a role he had not previously been keen to embrace.<br />
Initially, the new life and responsibilities that he faced<br />
proved too much and he returned to Pontus. After ten weeks<br />
of turmoil, he finally decided to accept his new role and returned<br />
home again.<br />
Although he suffered from poor health, St Gregory was<br />
called upon by the Orthodox bishops to help rebuild the<br />
Orthodox Church in Constantinople that had been persecuted<br />
by the pro-Arian emperor Valens. St Gregory faced<br />
much opposition from Arian Christians in his work but he<br />
began by turning his own house into a church. He worked<br />
tirelessly to promote the Nicean Creed against the beliefs of<br />
the powerful Arians and developed a reputation as an impressive<br />
theologian. St Gregory was a key figure in the Council of<br />
