SAINTS Elements of the ceremony that St Dunstan had created have survived to the present day and form part of the modern British coronation ceremony. Although St Dunstan continued to have an active role in state life through the reigns of Edgar’s successors, Edward and Ethelred the Unready, he withdrew increasingly into monastic life at Canterbury as he grew older. He died at the age of seventy-nine on 19 May 988 AD. Following his death, he was recognised as a saint and his cult amongst the English was extremely popular. He was buried at Canterbury Cathedral which was burnt down in 1074 AD.When the new cathedral was built his remains were translated to the new building. However, Glastonbury Abbey also claimed to be the resting place of the relics of St Dunstan, a claim that was eventually dismissed in 1508 when his tomb within Canterbury Cathedral was opened and his relics were found to be intact. Today, it is recognised that he played an important role in shaping early English history and traditions. Because of his own skill and work in the arts and crafts, he is the patron saint of goldsmiths, locksmiths and jewellers. In religious art St Dunstan is often shown with a pair of tongs.This is because of a story that the devil once tried to tempt the saint who then held him by the nose with a pair of tongs.Another interesting myth regarding the saint is claimed by some to be the basis of the belief in lucky horseshoes. According to tradition, the devil once asked St Dunstan to re-shoe his horse. St Dunstan is said to have then nailed the shoe to the devil’s own hoof. When the devil cried in pain, the saint said that he would take it off if the devil agreed that he would never enter a house with a horseshoe placed over the door. •58•
Saints and OtherWorld Religions Whilst the concept of sainthood is essentially a Christian one, it is clear that many other world religions view certain individuals as in some way sacred or holy. It is interesting to note how many parallels exist between apparently different cultures and observe the ways in which different religions with common roots have intertwining features.This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that certain figures and individuals, amongst them a number of Christian saints, have come to be revered by a number of different religions and faith systems. Angel Gabriel The Archangel Gabriel is of great significance within the Abrahamic religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Gabriel is consistently envisioned as God’s messenger and his name means‘man of God’. He is conceived of as being second only in importance within the Heavenly Host to theArchangel Michael. In the Old Testament the Archangel Gabriel helps Daniel to interpret his visions (Daniel 8: 15 and 9: 21). In the New Testament, Gabriel appears to the aged Zechariah and tells him that his wife will give birth to the prophet St John the •59•
