sentence but they refused to do so. Over the course of the<br />

next couple of years, many of the remaining members of the<br />

Carthusian community took the oath in the face of the threat<br />

of death but some remained defiant. Horrifically, ten<br />

Carthusian monks who refused to take the oath were placed<br />

in Newgate Prison where they were left to die of starvation.<br />

St Philip Howard<br />

Just as the reign of HenryVIII had created martyrs in England<br />

for the Roman Catholic Church, so too did the reign of his<br />

daughter Elizabeth I. Prominent amongst these was Philip<br />

Howard, the earl of Arundel. Born in 1557, he was the eldest<br />

son of the Duke of Norfolk and was one of the highest-ranking<br />

aristocrats in England. He was the heir not only to the<br />

earldom of Arundel but also to five other baronies. He was<br />

raised as a protestant but the loyalty of his father to Queen<br />

Elizabeth was questioned when he offered to marry Mary<br />

Queen of Scots.The Duke of Norfolk was tried on a charge of<br />

high treason, pronounced guilty and subsequently executed in<br />

1572. Although the treason of his father blackened the family<br />

name, Howard was given into the charge of Lord Burghley<br />

and he received a good education at Cambridge University.<br />

Despite his family history, he went on to achieve favour at<br />

the court of Elizabeth I. However, in 1581, Howard took the<br />

decision to leave England and to become a Catholic. He had<br />

apparently been persuaded to embrace Catholicism by the arguments<br />

of the Jesuit priest and martyr Edmund Campion.<br />

He took a ship to Europe with his wife Anne Dacres, planning<br />

to start a new life and to convert to Catholicism. When his<br />

plan was discovered, the ship he was travelling on was stopped<br />

and he was placed under arrest. He was then held in theTower<br />
