On Riveted Joints.<br />

In a recent issue of <strong>The</strong> Boiler Maker, a little monthlj r publication issued by Joseph<br />

T. Ryerson & Son, of Chicago, 111., we find an implied criticism of the methods used<br />

by the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company in calculating the<br />

efficiency of riveted joints. <strong>The</strong> criticism emanates from Mr. D. B. Dixon, of the St.<br />

Louis Association of Stationary Engineers, and it is based upon a comparison of a riveted<br />

joint designed by this company with another joint, which is alleged to be closely similar,<br />

and which was tested to destruction at the Watertown Arsenal. <strong>The</strong> two joints thus<br />
